Biologics

Other Treatments

Other treatments, beyond allergy shots, and medications that treat allergies at a cellular level exist and are available at Majmudar Allergy for our patients. These options include biologics like Dupixent, Nucala, Tezspire, Fasenra, and Xolair.

Dupixent is a monoclonal antibody injection used to treat moderate to severe eczema, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic esophagitis, and severe asthma. It blocks proteins called interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 that cause inflammatory responses.

Nucala is a monoclonal antibody injection used as an add-on maintenance treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. Nucala works by blocking interleukin 5, a protein that activates and causes eosinophils.

Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell that can accumulate in tissues and blood. By reducing the levels of eosinophils, Nucala minimizes the frequency of asthma attacks in patients.

Tezspire is a monoclonal antibody injection used as an add-on maintenance for adult and pediatric patients 12 and older who have severe asthma. It works by binding to an epithelial cytokine called thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), which initiates an allergic inflammatory response in the lungs.

Tezspire blocks all TSLP activity and prevents any downstream processes that lead to bronchial constriction and asthma symptoms. It is given to patients every four weeks and has been shown to reduce asthma exacerbations.

Fasenra is a monoclonal antibody treatment used on patients 12 and older with severe eosinophilic asthma. It binds to the eosinophils, which are disease-causing white blood cells.

These white blood cells are often found in large numbers in the bloodstream and lungs of patients with severe asthma. Because Fasenra directly binds with the eosinophils, it rapidly depletes them within 24-48 hours, resulting in almost total elimination.

Fasenra significantly improves asthma symptoms and lung function in severe asthma patients. It also dramatically minimizes exacerbations and the need for oral corticosteroids.  Patients receive Fasenra once every four weeks for the first three doses and then once every 8 weeks.

Xolair is an injectable prescription biologic medication. It can treat persistent allergic asthma, chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU), which is a severe form of hives, and multiple food allergies.

Xolair targets and blocks immunoglobulin E (IgE), which is crucial for the body’s allergic response. If patients have elevated IgE levels and allergen-triggered symptoms, Xolair prevents the IgE proteins from binding allergens, reducing the immune response, and minimizing inflammation.
